With this year’s annual show just a few weeks away, now is the time to start thinking about preparing those orchids for the big day. Walter Scheeren will offer a helpful hand (or perhaps a helpful green thumb) with a presentation on “Preparing Your Orchids for Show and Exhibition” at the KDOC monthly meeting on July 12.
WAIKIKI BEACH, HI – The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club was recognized by Scenic Hawai’i, Inc. at the 11th annual Betty Crocker Landscape Awards ceremony at the Outrigger Canoe Club on June 19 for its involvement with the Orchid Grotto. The KDOC won the Award of Appreciation under the volunteer/community garden category.
AOS this month brought us an array of information. I really love the beginning of the magazine and how it gives an overview of Cattleya propagation. How to keep them happy and blooming for years. I am personally not to lucky with this alliance of orchids but after this article it has given me a burst of energy to keep try again.

Roy Tokunaga didn’t want to just grow orchids, he wanted to grow large orchids. Very large.
And after years of perfecting his craft, Tokunaga was on hand at the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club’s monthly meeting on June 12 to share some of his extensive knowledge with his specimen plant culture presentation.
HONALO, HI (AP) – “A Rainbow of Orchids” is the theme of the 31st annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club Show and Sale on Sunday, July 28 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall.
Admission is free and the annual event offers complimentary refreshments, plus an orchid boutonniere corsage—while they last. Cameras are welcome.
In addition to an elaborate indoor display of blooming orchids showcasing the many colors found in numerous hybrids, the show offers a specialty collection of United States Postal Service orchid stamps and colorful orchid badges from clubs across the nation. The unique display includes a selection of antique and modern magnifying glasses to examine the stamps by club historian Carol Zakahi.
