New Orchid Species Discovered in Chile

Santiago (EFE) – A group of researchers at the School of Forestry Sciences at Chile’s Universidad de Concepcion have discovered a new species of orchid, which they have dubbed Bipinnula gabriel.

This significant discovery, led by Pablo Bravo, is the result of a more than four-year study of a plant found in the Putu area, 258 kilometers (160 miles) south of Santiago.

Happy 32nd Anniversary KDOC

The Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club wasn’t born yesterday. This was the 32nd anniversary, after all.

Those who wondered over near the membership table during this year’s show may have spotted the old (well, I shouldn’t say old) photo album with pictures of the KDOC’s first show and sale in 1983.

Celebrating Orchids

HONOLO – Orchid boutonniere corsage were affixed to more than 500 people who came to “Celebrate with Orchids” at the 32nd annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club show & sale on Sunday, July 27 at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall.

This year’s celebratory theme was in conjunction with the mission’s 100th anniversary year. The KDOC has been meeting and holding shows at the mission since the club’s inception in 1983.

Battling the Coqui Epidemic

Coqui frogs are rapidly spreading on the Orchid Isle. And in addition to creating extra background noise at monthly Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club meetings, these pests present a problem to orchid growers as well.

To help shed some light on the subject, Vickie Kibler will be giving a presentation on coqui control at the next KDOC meeting on August 13.
