The Silence of the Coqui

Although coqui frogs have perfect attendance over the past several years at the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club’s monthly meetings, they are still not welcome guests on the west side of the Big Island.

From orchid growers to coffee farmers, all residents would like their quiet nights back. Vickie Kibler discussed this rapidly spreading epidemic at the August 13 KDOC meeting.

Orchid lei featured on July GQ cover

Oh my, look at those orchids! This summer I was walking by a magazine stand, and couldn’t help but notice that a orchid lei was featured on the July cover of GQ Magazine.

Impossible to miss those white dendrobiums. I eventually noticed model/actress Emily Ratajkowski in the background, who got all oiled up and posed with the orchid lei on a black sand beach somewhere around here on the Kona Coast of Hawaii. Probably good publicity for orchids and for Hawaii.

Project: Orchid

As you probably know, the Big Island has had another long-time nickname, “The Orchid Isle”. We in the Hilo Orchid Society have begun working on a renewed effort to place orchids all around the island in as many public places and outdoors in nature as possible. We have named this effort “The Orchid Isle Project”. The Hawaii County Council along with Mayor Billy Kenoi has proclaimed 2014 as the Year of the Hawaii Island Orchid. This project is designed to improve quality of life among our island residents, support our 70+ commercial orchid growers, and attract visitors to come here and see orchids growing outdoors in nature.

Arranging Orchids

Sometimes the best way to learn is by doing. And this month the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club will get hands-on demonstrations on different ways to display all those orchids. After all, you’ve got to do something with them. Some of us have orchid collections rapidly expanding on your lanai and in your backyard (perhaps spreading more rapily than coquis).
