There was a somewhat low turnout for KDOC’s annual open house meeting on April 10, but members in attendance were treated to a feast fit for a New Year’s celebration.
The biggest news stemming from April’s monthly meeting was the announcement that this year’s annual orchid show, which is scheduled for July 28, will be titled “Rainbow of Orchids.”
Carol Zakahi will showcase a display of orchid stamps and badges that have been collected throughout the years. Orchid show chair Stephanie Conant still needs a volunteer to run the food committee. The orchid show food chairperson will be responsible for organizing breakfast on Saturday prior to the show, as well as breakfast and lunch on Sunday, the day of the show. There were 12 volunteers working in the kitchen for last year’s show; only four people have agreed so far. Taiko Drummers have signed on for this year’s show and will perform at 10 am. Scouts will help with parking, as usual.
Betty commented on the very touching prayer which Rev. Jiko gave at the orchid grotto work party the previous Sunday, and summarized the grotto progress for the past month. Kalapana Tropicals, OrchidPeople and Winning Orchids have all donated large amounts of orchids. Many, many mahalos to them. Sarah read a letter from Rev. Jiko to the group titled “Labor of Love”, in which she expressed her gratitude to KDOC for the gift of the orchid grotto.
The Hospice of Kona also sent the KDOC a thank you letter for the beautiful orchids and generosity in regards to our March program, Dividing Orchids for Hospice. A wooden plague will be made honoring the KDOC’s donation.
And since April was open house month, Carol Z opened up the meeting by reading a brief history of the club for our guests.
