HONOLO – Orchid boutonniere corsage were affixed to more than 500 people who came to “Celebrate with Orchids” at the 32nd annual Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club show & sale on Sunday, July 27 at the Daifukuji Soto Mission Hall.
This year’s celebratory theme was in conjunction with the mission’s 100th anniversary year. The KDOC has been meeting and holding shows at the mission since the club’s inception in 1983.
An elaborate display of live blooming orchids filled the mission hall, along with a display of orchid-themed vases and a sampling of ways to integrate the plants into lanai décor. Benches and chairs with orchid-themed magazines and books were strategically placed amid the orchids, giving attendees a place to relax as well as a place for a photo op (many pictures were taken in the corner chair).
Outside, orchids flew out of the sales booth and into the hands of eager growers. The neighboring Question and Answer Booth then provided expert advice on caring for orchids.
At 10 a.m. a crowd gathered on the steps of the mission to watch the Daifukuji Taiko drummers perform, and everyone in attendance collectively watched in awe.
Many people made their way through their temple to the see the award-winning orchid grotto behind Kannon Hall, getting a chance to see what orchids looked like out of the pot.
More specific numbers will be made available at the August meeting.
