With this year’s annual show just a few weeks away, now is the time to start thinking about preparing those orchids for the big day.
Walter Scheeren will offer a helpful hand (or perhaps a helpful green thumb) with a presentation on “Preparing Your Orchids for Show and Exhibition” at the KDOC monthly meeting on July 12.
Scheeren first became interested in the exotic plants as a young boy growing up in Germany. He started collecting the plants at age 15 during World War II in Austria, and has been growing them ever since.
Scheeren became an American Orchid Society judge in the early 80’s, and moved to the Big Island with his wife in 2000. After putting 10,000 miles on a rental car, they settled on their present location at Kalopa Mauka on the Hamakua Coast at 1900-foot elevation.
