Roy Tokunaga of H&R Nurseries in Waimanalo on Oahu will be the guest speaker at the Kona Daifukuji Orchid Club’s monthly meeting on June 12.
Roy’s program will be on specimen plant Culture, offering something for beginners as well as advanced growers.
“One of my passions has been growing specimen plants,” Roy said, “and I have been working on a specimen program for a long time.”
Roy graduated from of the University of Hawaii in 1973 with degrees in biology and secondary education. When he couldn’t find a teaching job after graduation, he started working with orchids and has been involved with them ever since. He started growing commercially in 1974, mostly involved with seed germination and cloning orchids. In 1986 he started hybridizing, working primarily with Dendrobiums.
Roy is currently the Vice-President of H&R Nurseries, Inc. of Waimanalo, Hawaii. H&R Nurseries is a world renowned and well respected grower of quality orchids. In addition to his duties at H&R, Roy is a long time member of the Honolulu Orchid Society and an accredited American Orchid Society judge.
